Takami Shimonaka Igawa, 89, of Buena Park, Calif., passed away on March 30, 2025, in Hiroshima, Japan. Takami was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sumiko; mother, Toshiyo Shimonaka; father, Soichi Shimonaka; brother, Yoshikatsu Shimonaka; and brothers-in-law, James Seishiro Yasuda and Kenneth Hiroshi Igawa. He is survived by his sons, Hidenori (Yuko) Igawa, Michitoshi (Stacey) Shimonaka, and Douglas Yoshinobu Igawa; grandsons, Kyle Yoshio and Joel Saburo Shimonaka; great-grandsons, Oliver Wayne and Arlo Jones Shimonaka; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was born in Etajima City, Okimicho Miyoshi, Hiroshima, and survived the atomic bomb as a schoolboy. Stateside, where he called home for over 65 years, he was deeply engaged with the Hiroshima Kenjinkai of Southern California, and served as its president. He lived a full life and enjoyed fishing, family camping trips, and regular trips to Japan. He will be greatly missed.
Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA 90601 (Garden of Truth; Gate 1; Section 1; Lot 1444).
