Celebrate the release of “It Rhymes with Takei,” the new graphic memoir from George Takei, on Thursday, July 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Japanese American National Museum’s Democracy Center, 100 N. Central Ave. in Little Tokyo. (Rescheduled from an earlier date)
Takei has shown the world many faces: actor, author, outspoken activist, helmsman of the starship Enterprise, living witness to the Japanese American incarceration, and king of social media. But until Oct. 27, 2005, there was always one piece missing — one face he did not show the world.
Now, for the first time ever, he shares the full story of his life in the closet, his decision to come out as gay at 68, and how that moment transformed everything. “It Rhymes with Takei” presents a charismatic and candid account of how far America has come … and how precious that progress is.
He will be in conversation with Jonathan Kaji, the son of Bruce Kaji, JANM’s founding president, whose leadership played a crucial role in introducing Takei to the museum and encouraging his involvement as a board trustee. Takei will also be joined by his husband, Brad Takei. They were married in a 2008 ceremony held at JANM.
“It Rhymes with Takei will be available at the JANM Store. Store sales and a book-signing will occur after the program.
