Ichi-Mi is an affiliate organization of Gardena Buddhist Church that seeks to provide a safe space for LGBTQ+ temple members, their families and allies to create conditions so that everyone can safely hear the Nembutsu teaching.
Founded 11 years ago, “Ichi-Mi” means one in taste or flavor. It stems from the writings of Shinran Shonin, founder of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition in Japan. Under Amida Buddha, we are all of the same essence or value.
On Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Ichi-Mi will host a seminar entitled “Breaking the Silence.” The evening before at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, there will be an informal social gathering. Both events will take place at Gardena Buddhist Church. The events are an opportunity to break the silence by exploring LGBT+ identities and experiences within the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist community.
Those interested in the seminar and/or social event can register at: https://givebutter.com/ichimi25-breakingsilence
The August seminar follows Ichi-Mi’s groundbreaking film last year, “A Profound Silence,” which debuted and was well received at many temples. This short film will be shown at the Friday evening social.
