The Japanese tradition of Joya no Kane or New Year’s Eve bell-ringing was observed at Gardena Buddhist Church following an early evening service. Despite the rain, temple members of all ages struck the bell 108 times, symbolizing the cleansing of 108 worldly passions that lead to suffering and hinder spiritual growth. In Japan, the last strike coincides with the stroke of midnight, the beginning of the new year. At GBC, toshikoshi soba is traditionally served after the bell-ringing, but since the Social Hall is undergoing renovation, participants were sent home with instant noodles.
