The 31st annual edition of the Critics Choice Awards took place on Jan. 4 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

Despite entering the day with a leading 17 nominations — just short of the record of 18 set by “Barbie” two years ago — the horror-drama “Sinners” failed to capture the big prize but did earn an original screenplay award for writer-director Ryan Coogler, among a few other trophies.

The cast of “Sinners,” which is set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, included Yao (Thomas Pang) and Li Jun Li as husband-and-wife shopkeepers Bo Chow and Grace Chow, and Helena Hu as their daughter Lisa.

The award for best picture went to “One Battle After Another.” Nominees also included Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet,” which received 11 nominations, and Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked: For Good,” which received seven nominations.

Zhao was among the nominees for best director. The award went to Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another.”

Nominees for best young actor/actress included Nina Ye for Shih-Ching Tsou’s “Left-Handed Girl” and Shannon Mahina Gorman for Hikari’s “Rental Family.” The award went to Miles Caton for “Sinners.”

Nominees for best adapted screenplay included Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell for “Hamnet” and Park Chan-wook, Lee Kyoung-mi, Don Mckellar, and Jahye Lee for Park’s “No Other Choice.” The award went to Anderson for “One Battle After Another.”

“No Other Choice” and “Left-Handed Girl” were among the nominees for best foreign-language film. The award went to “The Secret Agent.”

“Kpop Demon Hunters” was named best animated feature and also won best song for “Golden.”

Nominees for best hair and makeup included Kazu Hiro, Felix Fox and Mia Neal for “The Smashing Machine,” which stars Dwayne Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The award went to the team from “Frankenstein.”

In the television categories, nominees for best supporting actress in a drama series included Greta Lee for “The Morning Show.” The award went to Katherine LaNasa for “The Pitt.”

The popular South Korean drama “Squid Game” was named best foreign-language series. Nominees included “Last Samurai Standing.”
