Brian L. Chin, beloved husband, urban planner, devoted friend, and longtime Pasadena resident, passed away on February 8, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was 64.
Brian grew up in the San Fernando Valley. He earned a B.A. in geography from Cal State LA after beginning his studies at UCLA, and later received a Master’s Degree in urban planning from the University of Southern California. A proud Trojan, he and his wife Kim were enthusiastic supporters of USC athletics especially basketball in recent years.
Brian worked at Afriat Consulting Group, for a few years and eventually went out on his own, where he was especially passionate about nonprofit and community-oriented housing projects, including work with Catholic Charities and Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA). Among his achievements was his contribution to the YWCA Greater Los Angeles campus project, notable for a crosswalk he helped secure that improved pedestrian safety on Olive Street.
Brian was known for his generosity, resourcefulness and quiet ability to bring people together. He loved connecting friends and colleagues (even at his wedding), and took great joy when those connections flourished. He was an avid researcher, photographer, hockey player, Naui-certified scuba diver, and collector of coins and sports cards, and enjoyed watching rocket launches and the annual New Year’s Day B-1 bomber flyover. Born in Canada, Brian proudly embraced the United States as home and never missed saying the Pledge of Allegiance.
Brian was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Virginia, his brother-in-law, Curtis and nephew, Joseph Tachiki. He is survived by his wife Kim Tachiki-Chin; his family including Norman, Yoshie, Scott, Mandy, Jeremy, Justin, Daniel, Jonathan, Christine, Ed, Debbie, Madison, Nicholas, Judi; and numerous other close friends. He also leaves treasured pets, Sumo and Penelope.
A viewing will take place on February 27, 2026 from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. at Fukui Mortuary “Chapel in the Garden,” 707 E. Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
