Dr. Shinichi “Shin-san” Hirokawa of Torrance passed away on Dec. 24, 2025, at age 62.

He was a devoted educator and assistant professor at Westcliff University in Irvine, singer and master of ceremonies, lead vocalist of Team Kawachi Ondo, and president of the L.A. Kansai Club.

Born in Niigata, he earned degrees in English literature, project management (MBA), and international business (DBA). After moving to the U.S. in 2002, he dedicated himself to education, cultural expression, and community service.

Known for performing entirely from memory, Hirokawa co-founded Team Kawachi Ondo with his partner, Fumio Maruyama (Moo), and brought joy to audiences across Southern California and beyond.

He is remembered for his down-to-earth, warmly approachable personality and commitment to building and leadership.connections through music, education, and leadership.

As the funeral service will be held privately with family members only in Japan, a memorial and farewell gathering will be held locally for friends, colleagues, and members of the community to come together and honor his life.

Date and location: Saturday, March 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Toyota Meeting Hall, 3330 Civic Center Dr., Torrance.
