“Samurai of the Diamond,” a new mural by Robert Vargas, will be unveiled on Tuesday, March 24, at 10 a.m. at the Doubletree by Hilton Torrance-South Bay, 21333 Hawthorne Blvd., Torrance. To highlight the connection between baseball, Japan and the Torrance community, the mural depicts Dodgers players Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki. The photo shows the work-in-progress on March 12. Admission to the event and parking in the south lot are complimentary.
Vargas, an internationally recognized artist, created the Ohtani mural on the Miyako Hotel in Little Tokyo as well as a mural in Ohtani’s hometown, Oshu, Iwate Prefecture. Torrance has established a friendship-city relationship with Oshu and Yamamoto’s hometown, Bizen, Okayama Prefecture. The Torrance mural is expected to become a prominent landmark, attracting locals and visitors alike.
