Netflix Is a Joke presents Yuriyan Retriever on Saturday, May 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) at Laugh Factory Hollywood, 8001 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.
Retriever is one of Japan’s most celebrated comedians and a global breakout star known for her fearless physical comedy, sharp characters, and English-language performances. She reached worldwide audiences starring in the Netflix series “The Queen of Villains,” won the 2025 Asian Academy Creative Award for Best Actress, and recently made her feature film directorial debut with the horror film “Mag Mag.”
She first gained international attention with her unforgettable appearance on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and continues to build a global following from her base in Los Angeles.
In Japan, Retriever is a household name and the winner of the prestigious R-1 Grand Prix, the national championship for solo comedians. Her work spans television, film, stand-up, music, and voice acting, and she is known for performing bold characters and multilingual sketches that connect with audiences across cultures.
“Mag Mag” premiered at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles and was selected for more than 20 international film festivals, winning major awards including Best Feature at the Monsters Fantastic Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Montreal New Cinema Festival, and the NETPAC Award at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.
Beyond comedy and film, Retriever is also a recording artist who debuted with Universal Music, releasing her first single, “Yuriyan Time.” Her dream is to become a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” and someday win an Academy Award.
