
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3670– Kazuo Masuda recently recognized two exceptional young leaders, Brent Nakanishi from Gardena Buddhist Church Troop 242 and Nicholas Nakagawa from Orange County Buddhist Church Troop 578, as recipients of the 2026 VFW Scout of the Year Award.
Both scouts were honored for their outstanding achievements in scouting, leadership, community service, and commitment to the values of citizenship and character.
Brent has dedicated nearly 12 years to scouting and currently serves as a junior assistant scoutmaster. A Life Scout and accomplished student-athlete, he has demonstrated leadership through numerous scout positions and community service activities.
His Eagle Scout project brought together approximately 70 volunteers to construct planter boxes for North High School’s Urban Farming program, creating a lasting benefit for students and the community.
Nicholas began his scouting journey as a Tiger Cub and earned the Arrow of Light before advancing through Scouts BSA to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He has earned 61 merit badges and numerous Eagle Palms, reflecting his dedication to learning and personal growth. His extensive service includes environmental conservation projects, community events, and support for veterans.

For his Eagle Scout project, Nicholas led improvements to the Niguel Hills Middle School garden, coordinating fundraising efforts and volunteer teams to enhance the campus for future students.
The VFW Scout of the Year Award recognizes scouts who exemplify the values shared by both scouting and military service, including leadership, service, integrity, and dedication to community. Brent and Nicholas represent these ideals with distinction and serve as outstanding examples for future generations of scouts.
