Participants in TaikoProject’s 2024 Summer Youth Camp.
TaikoProject hosts its second Summer Youth Camp from July 20-24 in Little Tokyo.
Taiko has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries and in its modern form combines athleticism, dance and musicality. While the focus of the camp will be learning how to play taiko through exercises and games, the instructors also aim to teach campers about Japanese culture through Obon dancing and arts and crafts.
At the end of the week, campers will be able to showcase what they have learned in a small recital and will also get to take home all of the crafts made throughout the week. Campers will also have the opportunity to perform at Higashi Honganji’s annual Obon Festival on July 25.
Two tracks will be offered: a beginning track (ages 7-12) and an intermediate track (ages 9-14) for more experienced taiko players. Both tracks will be taught by professional staff members from TaikoProject. For the intermediate track, guest teachers will provide additional instruction to broaden the campers’ taiko experience.
Date and time: Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24, 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm
Location: Centenary United Methodist Church, 300 S. Central Ave., Los Angeles
Tuition: $350
