Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) issued the following statement on July 20:
“I join people across Hawaii and throughout our nation in mourning the tragic loss of 1st Lt. Tyler J. Feehan of Ewa Beach.
“Today, my thoughts and aloha are with 1st Lt. Feehan’s family, and the families of all the brave servicemembers killed and injured in this war.
“As we honor their service and sacrifice, I remain committed to doing everything in my power to bring an end to this war.”
According to the Department of Defense, Feehan, 25, and Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, were killed in Jordan on July 17 while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.
Feehan will be posthumously promoted to the rank of captain and awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge medals.
A third servicemember was reported missing in the same attacks and U.S. Central Command said July 19 that “unidentified remains” had been found and were being examined.
Another servicemember was killed in northern Iraq on July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, according to U.S. Central Command.
“Seventeen U.S. servicemembers have lost their lives at the hands of Trump’s illegal war with Iran,” Hirono said. “This is a war of choice, not necessity. Those servicemembers should be alive.
“How much heartbreak, loss, and sacrifice will it take for this regime to end its reckless and lethal war?”
