The second annual GVJCI Car Show will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22, ,from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, 1964 W. 162nd St., Gardena.
Gardena has a thriving car culture with people having not only the well-known American muscle cars but also modified foreign makes such as the Datsun 510s, 240Zs, Subaru, Honda and Toyota Celicas. With a mix of today’s version of these cars and others, organizers would like to bring back fond memories of yesteryear and show how this car culture continues today.
Cars on display will include Brian Omatsu’s 1951 Mercury, Purple Reign, and the Mooneyes car in which Chico Kodama set a Bonneville Flats record of 243.124 mph in 2021.
The program will include screenings of “Japanese American Legacy on Wheels” by Mitchell Matsumura and “Craft of Speed,” a Mooneyes documentary directed by Ming Lai.
General admission is $15 at the door. Children under 12 admitted free.
The event will include vendors, games for kids, and an Okamoto Kitchen food truck. Cashless but credit cards accepted.
