Downey United Methodist Church invites you to observe World Peace Sunday with a private screening of the NHK World Japan documentary “Silenced Witness: Nagasaki in the Eyes of a U.S. Combat Artist” on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the church, 10801 Downey Ave., Downey.
Worship begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by luncheon and screening at 12 p.m.
The documentary follows Ted Gilien (1914-1967), whose life was transformed by the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Hisphotos and paintings depicted the strength of the human spirit, and he devoted his life to creating art that opposed war.
NHK World Japan filmed a portion of the documentary at Downey UMC, where Jeremy, Ted’s son, is the music director. During worship, Jeremy will debut a new musical setting titled “Invictus” after his father’s painting of the same name, which will be displayed during the luncheon.
This event celebrates Ted’s legacy, reflects on his art, and is grounded in the theme of world peace.
In addition to Jeremy, discussion panelists will be Pastor Yoshi Kuramoto of San Pedro UMC and Rev. Dr. B. Yuki Schwartz of Claremont School of Theology.
