WASHINGTON — Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), who served with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, issued the following statement on Veterans Day (Nov. 11):

“Today, please take time to honor the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. Those willing to risk everything to defend the American way of life are deeply deserving of our gratitude and respect.

“We must thank their families. They remain behind while their loved ones serve, each day hoping and praying that they return home safe.

“Most importantly, remember those who lost their lives fighting for this great nation. I will never forget the brave men of ‘E’ Company who I fought with in Europe during World War II. Far too many of them died and I will be forever grateful for what they gave to this country.

“Right now, thousands of men and women who have spent the last decade fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq are coming home. I urge you to welcome them with kindness. Help them find work, lend a hand when needed and ensure that they never forget how grateful we are for their service.”
