Sumiko M. Kobata was born on April 23, 1927 in Terminal Island, CA and passed away on February 13, 2013 in Long Beach, CA at the age of 85.
Sumiko was a loving wife and dedicated mother and grandmother. She kept her family history alive by sharing and reliving stories of her time growing up in Terminal Island, being in the internment camp at Manzanar, CA during World War II, where she graduated high school and worked as a bookkeeper, and her return to the Long Beach area. After leaving the internment camp she held a job as a seamstress before marrying.
She is survived by her husband, Steve Kobata; her children, Robert (Shulamite) Kobata , Joyce (Chi Kit) Cheung, and Daniel (Esther) Kobata; her brother, Yosh (Jane) Masuda; and her grandchildren, Stephen Kobata, Tori Kobata and Danielle Kobata.
Memorial and burial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
