TORRANCE — Junior guard Kayla Sato scored 15 points on Nov. 30 as the West Torrance Warriors claimed the Inglewood Holiday Tip-Off Classic championship with a 52-40 win over Mira Costa.

Sato grabbed seven rebounds, had three assists and was perfect from the free-throw line, converting all 11 of her attempts.

Frosh Jasmine Jones led the Warriors with 17 in the clash between Bay League rivals. Kylie Fujioka added five and four rebounds, and Hayley Tanabe contributed two points with three boards.

Haley Tojo led Mira Costa with 15 points, making three of her nine 3-point attempts. Keilani Ikehara added four for the Mustangs.

Leading 24-18 after halftime, West (5-0) began to run away with the game, leading to as many as 15 before Mira Costa (4-1) clawed back with five points in the fourth.

Following the Battle at the Beach tournament, West will open its regular-season schedule on Dec. 18 at North Torrance. Mira Costa will host Inglewood on the 10th to open their 2013-14 campaign.

The Warriors and Mustangs will have a rematch during league play on Jan. 14 at Mira Costa.

In the Downey Tournament, Katelyn Serizawa scored 11 points as the North scored a second-round win over Lakewood, 60-40. Lauren Takata added eight points for North.

On the boys’ side, Chad Ashimine scored 17 points as North took third place at the Mira Costa Pacific Shores Tournament, topping Torrance by a 71-58 score. Torrance was led by Corey Kitani’s 15 points.
