A memorial service for the late Teruko Victoria Sakai, devoted mother and loving wife to the late Mamoru Sakai, was held on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at the Gardena Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Sakai, who was 85 years old, passed away at her residence on Nov. 5, 2014.
Mrs. Sakai was born on Dec. 12, 1928, in the country of Peru, to Toshio and Hanako Suematsu. Upon the passing of her parents in Peru, Mrs. Sakai and her sister Shizuko and younger brother Masa were cared for by a family friend, Mr. Yoshisada Shiga.
Mrs. Sakai was incarcerated during WWII in Crystal City, Texas with Mr. Shiga, her sister and her brother along with other Peruvians of Japanese descent.
Mrs. Sakai later became a U.S. citizen and resided in Los Angeles and Gardena with her late husband, Mamoru Sakai.
She is survived by her sons, Alan (Mary), Peter (Liz) and David Sakai; brother, Mas Suematsu; also survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
