gila river and mamaBERKELEY — A free showing of the documentary “Gila River and Mama: The Ruth Mix Story” on Sunday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at Berkeley Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple, 1524 Oregon St. in Berkeley.

This is the story of 15-year-old Ruth Mix, who was the only Caucasian nurse’s aide at the Butte Camp Hospital at Gila River internment camp in Arizona during World War II. She lived on-site in a barrack with her mother, Frida, who was a teacher in the camp school.

The documentary was produced, written and directed by the late Claire Mix, Ruth’s daughter. Executive producer Charles Class will comment on the film and will be selling DVDs. Donations to Higashi Honganji are welcome.
