A Day of Remembrance for Chol Soo Lee will be held on Saturday, March 21, at 3 p.m. at the Advancing Justice-LA Community Room, 1145 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles.
Lee, a Korean immigrant, was wrongfully convicted of a San Francisco Chinatown murder in 1973 and sentenced to life in prison, then was sentenced to death when he killed another inmate in self-defense.
Through the efforts of a defense community and support from Asian American groups across the country, he was freed in 1983. His case is regarded as one of the nation’s first pan-Asian civil rights campaigns.
Lee died on Dec. 2, 2014 in San Francisco at the age of 62.
The program is sponsored by Serve the People Institute, UCLA Asian American Studies Center, UC Davis, and the K.W. Lee Center for Leadership.
