A 2013 edition of Amerasia Journal marked the 30th anniversary of Chol Soo Lee’s release from Death Row.

Lee, a Korean immigrant, was wrongfully convicted of a San Francisco Chinatown murder in 1973 and sentenced to life in prison, then was sentenced to death when he killed another inmate in self-defense.

Through the efforts of a defense community and support from Asian American groups across the country, he was freed in 1983. His case is regarded as one of the nation’s first pan-Asian civil rights campaigns.

Lee died on Dec. 2, 2014 in San Francisco at the age of 62.

The program is sponsored by Serve the People Institute, UCLA Asian American Studies Center, UC Davis, and the K.W. Lee Center for Leadership.
