This summer marks the 35th anniversary of the Summer Exploration program at Montebello Plymouth Congregational Church.

Summer Ex has enjoyed a long history of teaching and caring for children as one of the few four-week/all-day programs in the area. It began as an outreach project in 1980 under the direction of then Fuller Seminary student Alan Maeno, MPCC Youth Director Rennie Mau, and Pastor Michio Oyakawa. It has continued to thrive over the years with many of the students returning to serve as staff members. In addition, many of the directors have gone on to ordained ministry.

Summer Ex is open to children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 29 through July 24. The deadline for registration is June 10.

Summer Ex offers a variety of activities, including a music and worship time, class time devoted to Bible stories, outdoor games and weekly outings to the community plunge. Additional outings to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Bolsa Chica State Beach, Keiro Retirement Home, Soak City, and Knott’s Berry Farm are included in the registration fees.

For children in junior high, a four-day camping trip to El Capitan State Beach in Santa Barbara will take place July 6 to 9. Registration forms may be downloaded from the website, montebelloucc.org.
