Friends and family are invited to join in the celebration, which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center, located at 12953 Branford St. in Pacoima.

An extended family divided by the Pacific War find themselves in Manzanar and others trapped in Japan seek to reunite after the war. Professional women utilize their skills to establish their economic livelihood as an Issei midwife and Nisei translator of Japanese radio programs for the U.S. military, and single Nisei women exiting the camps seek friendship and economic stability as acting heads of household.

“The Winter of Melancholy” will be available for $14 at the party or can be ordered from carolyn@heritagesource.com or by calling Heritage Source toll free at (877) 758-0137. The book is also available at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo and will soon be available at Kinokuniya in San Francisco.
