Masaru Ota, 99, a Kibei Nisei was born Dec. 1917 in Baldwin Park, Calif. He lived a full life and passed away peacefully on March 18, 2017 of natural causes.
He leaves behind a wife of 77 years, Toshiye (Matsumura) Ota; a son, Shiyoji Ota; daughter, Shirley Bear; and two grandchildren, Scott Ota and Kristine Ota. He was preceded in death by his daughter Teruko Keene.
Always had a sense of humor, outgoing and would engage in conversation with anyone willing to talk or listen. Hard-working and retiring from a part-time job with the City of Los Angeles just prior to his 95th birthday.
Enjoyed playing games of strategy, whether cards, chess or mahjong, but his passion was Go. He grew up in a time where there was a strong interest of Go in the community and attended the club in downtown Los Angeles on a regular basis. He became very proficient, achieving a high amateur ranking.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 22, 2 p.m. at Senshin Buddhist Church, 1311 W 37th St., Los Angeles.
