Mary Yoshie Sakatani passed on July 17, 2018, five days shy of her 95th birthday. Mary was the daughter of one of Monrovia’s pioneers, Yutaro Uyeda, the Strawberry King, who came to Monrovia in 1907.

Mary, along with other Monrovians of Japanese descent, were sent to Heart Mountain, Wyoming concentration camp, where she met and married Masato Sakatani.

Mary leaves 3 daughters: Laurie Keiko, and twins Janice Fumiko and Julie Mieko; along with 3 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Service is on Thursday, July 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hills in Whittier.
