Lucky Sawamura
April 22, 1927 – May 23, 2020
Lucky Sawamura, born in Houston, Tx on April 22, 1927, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2020 at the age of 93 in Brea, CA. He was a longtime resident in the West Los Angeles area and moved to Brea in 2009.
Lucky was an aerospace engineer at Garrett Airesearch for 29 years and worked on the environmental control systems for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo rocket projects. He was also involved in the local WLA community where he served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 39 for many years as a mentor and role model. He was recognized by his peers for his long term meritorious service with the distinguished Silver Beaver award. Lucky also coached youth basketball and served as an integral part of the WLA Youth Club basketball tournaments. Following his retirement, he completed 17 Los Angeles marathons and pursued his passion for fishing.
Lucky is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Fumiko; daughter, Carol; sons, Mark (Judy Tong) and John (Joanna); grandson Jared and granddaughter Kaela. He was predeceased by his parents, Hachiro and Tomoe Sawamura; and sisters, Eiko, Yoneko, and Asako. Lucky was a humble man with a pure heart and will be dearly missed. He will be interned at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
