Masato “Mas” Hayashi

Masato “Mas” Hayashi, 81, a resident of Irvine, passed away at the Hoag Hospital Irvine on Sept. 25. Private services were held on Oct. 17.

Mas taught math at Irvine Valley College for 42 years. He was a coach for the 1987 Little World Series and managed the 1988 Little League California State Champions. Mas enjoyed going to Las Vegas and Disneyland, woodworking and cheering on UCLA. He is remembered for his generosity, kindness, sense of humor and love for family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Gayle Aiko (née Kawai); sons, Roy Masato (Olivia Hayashi) Hayashi and Eric Hideo (Gwen Muranaka) Hayashi; daughter, Melanie Tomiko (Benjamin Smith) Hayashi-Smith; grandchildren, Brent Michael, Alyssa Nicole and Jenna Grace Smith and Spencer Shin and Sadie Aiko Hayashi; brother Hideo (Karen) Hayashi of Oregon; sister Ruby Wakaye Hara of San Diego; brother, Norman Minoru (Peggy) Hayashi of Alaska; brother-in-law Leroy (Joyce) Kawai; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
