Daniel Michio Matsubara
November 6, 1931- December 2, 2020

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend passed away of pneumonia at the age of 89. Dan was born and raised in Los Angeles to Kiichi and Kikuno (Hamada) Matsubara of Kagoshima, Japan. He was the youngest of 3 sons and is predeceased by his parents and brothers, Satsuo and Yoneo. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Phyllis (Fukushima); daughters, Deedy Kurashima (Steve), Sandi Kosaka (Alan); son, Randy; and grandsons, Kyle, Derek Kurashima and Austin, Aidan Kosaka; sister-in-law Irene Matsubara; brother-in-law Ben Fukushima; and niece Ariel Fukushima. He was interned in Gila, Ariz. during the WWII, then lived in Denver, Colo. following camp and returned to Los Angeles. Upon graduation from Belmont High School, he served in the Korean War, continued his education and was employed with LAUSD for over 35 years as a teacher and adult school principal. He was an avid sports fan and history buff. Dan enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, sense of humor and devotion to his family. Due to the pandemic a virtual memorial will be held with a private ceremony at a later date.
