Greater Los Angeles JACL, co-hosting with Sansei Legacy, will present “Giant Robot: Asian American Pop Culture” online on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 1 to 2 p.m.

The book launch for “Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian American Pop Culture” will feature Giant Robot founder Eric Nakamura and a virtual screening of two short films, “L.A. Times Today: A Showcase of Asian and Asian American-Centered Art in Little Tokyo” (5:45 minutes) and “Eric Nakamura: L.A. at Play” (3:44 minutes), a feature by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

In 1994, Nakamura launched a zine called Giant Robot – a photocopied, hand-stapled fanboy’s collection of anime, kung fu movies, Japanese punk bands and skateboarding. Thirty years later, what started as a personal hobby has become a showcase of pop culture centering on Asian and Asian American artists.

An art exhibition celebrating the world of Giant Robot is currently on view at the Japanese American National Museum until Jan. 5, 2025.

After the films there will be a presentation by Nakamura on “Giant Robot: Asian American Pop Culture,” followed by Q&A. Mitchell Matsumura will serve as moderator.
