Committee of 100, a nonprofit organization of prominent Chinese Americans, announced April 18 that members of the cast of “The Joy Luck Club” will reunite at its upcoming Conference & Gala, where they will be honored with the Cultural Icon Award.
The celebration will take place during the Luncheon Plenary on Friday, April 25, at the Fairmont Century Plaza, 2025 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles. In a special program, journalist, television personality, and best-selling author Lisa Ling will lead a live conversation with the cast. The award will be presented by Janet Yang, president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and a Committee of 100 member.
Released in 1993 and based on Amy Tan’s bestselling novel, “The Joy Luck Club” broke barriers as one of the first major Hollywood films to center on Asian American experiences and feature a majority Asian cast. More than 30 years later, the film remains a touchstone for Asian American representation in media.
Scheduled to participate in the cast conversation are the four talented actresses who portrayed the daughters in the film: Rosalind Chao (who played Rose Hsu Jordan), Lauren Tom (who played Lena St. Clair), Tamlyn Tomita (who played Waverly Jong), and Ming-Na Wen (who played Jing-Mei (June) Woo).
This reunion marks a historic and heartfelt moment of celebration for an iconic film that paved the way for future generations of Asian American voices in entertainment.
For more than three decades, Committee of 100’s Conference & Gala has drawn hundreds of distinguished academics, policymakers, businesses, and next-generation leaders from across the U.S. for a series of discussions, debates, keynotes and networking sessions under the common goal of advocating for and promoting the full participation of the entire AAPI community in American society.
This year’s event will take place on April 25-26 at the Fairmont Century Plaza. In addition to the general sessions, the conference will have two concurrent tracks to cover important content on domestic issues faced by the AAPI community in the U.S. and foreign relations. The evening of the 25th will be topped off with a black-tie celebratory gala.
Described by The Boston Globe as “one of the world’s most remarkable singers,” Grammy Award-winning tenor Nicholas Phan will perform at the gala on the evening of April 25.
Shirley Wang, the founder and CEO of Plastpro Inc., an award-winning manufacturer of fiberglass doors, and her husband Walter Wang, the president and CEO of JM Eagle Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of plastic pipe, are being awarded the Committee of 100 2025 Leadership in Entrepreneurship Award.
