
The annual Hollywood Beauty Awards (HBAs), founded by Michele Elyzabeth, will celebrate a decade of honoring the architects of beauty at the 10th HBAs on Sunday, April 6, at Avalon Hollywood.
The HBAs recognize talent in hair, makeup, photography and styling for film, TV, music, the red carpet and editorial, as well as special honorees.
The HBAs announced that Mitsuyo Takasaki will be honored with Outstanding Achievement in International Hairstyling at the 10th ceremony.
HBAs previously announced Academy Award winner Janty Yates as the Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design honoree, Davis Factor for Outstanding Achievement in Photography, Academy Award nominee Mike Marino for Outstanding Achievement in SFX Makeup, 4-time Emmy nominee Debi Young for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup, and Emmy nominee Brian Badie for Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling.
Takasaki’s work on FX’s acclaimed series “Shōgun” and Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” solidified her reputation in the global film industry.
Hailing from Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, Takasaki is a distinguished makeup artist and hair stylist, renowned for her expertise in period drama styling, wig design, and special makeup techniques. She pursued her passion for makeup at the esteemed Shu Uemura Makeup School.
Her professional journey began with Yagi Katsura Inc., where she worked for almost three decades, playing a key role in the makeup department at Shochiku Studio. She became an Academy member in 2019.
Takasaki had the privilege of working with some of Japan’s most legendary filmmakers, including Kon Ichikawa, Nagisa Oshima, Kihachi Okamoto, Masahiro Shinoda, Yoji Yamada and Kinji Fukasaku, as well as collaborating with renowned kabuki actors and international film stars.
Under the guidance of her esteemed mentor Tsuneo Soga, Takasaki developed a unique ability to capture the subtle nuances of traditional Japanese period hairstyles, elevating the visual storytelling through her meticulous craftsmanship. Her impressive body of work includes notable TV series such as “Onihei Hankacho,” “Hissatsu Shigotonin,” “Kumokiri Nizaemon.” and more recently FX’s “Shōgun” series.
Her film credits include “The Twilight Samurai” (directed by Yoji Yamada), “Warau Iemon” (Yukio Ninagawa), “Hana” (Hirokazu Koreeda), “Silence” (Martin Scorsese), “Kaidan” (Hideo Nakata), “Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta” (Takashi Yamazaki), “Baragaki: Unbroken Samurai” (Masato Harada), and “Ikigai” (Amon Miyamoto), among many others.
Her work continues to bridge cultures, inspiring younger generations to pursue creative careers and preserving the rich heritage of Japanese film and theater.
Takasaki will accept the award at the black-tie ceremony on April 6, a benefit for Helen Woodward Animal Center.
The HBAs (www.hollywood-beautyawards.com) were established in 2014 for the purposes of recognizing excellence in beauty; celebrating the work of celebrity makeup artists, hair stylists, stylists, photographers and more who create the looks and set the trends with their creations for the red carpet, editorial, campaigns; as well as for film, TV and music.
The board is composed of past honorees, winners, and professionals from the beauty industry, encompassing journalists, publicists and agents. Winners are voted on by the public and the HBA board.
