April 16, 1932 – April 23, 2025
Masako Kato, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and lifelong learner, passed away peacefully at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and quiet strength.
Born on April 16, 1932, in Tokyo, Japan, Masako was one of six children born to Yosokichi and Natsu Terakura. She grew up in a time of great change and met life’s challenges with grace and resilience. In 1956, she bravely made a new home in the United States after marrying Mitsuo Kato, embarking on a life filled with purpose and family.
Masako was a devoted mother to her children: Angela, Dennis, Perry, and Hannah. Her love for them was boundless, and she nurtured their lives with patience, wisdom, and encouragement. She was also a loving grandmother to Kyle, Kris, Sean, Dylan, Quinn and Kimiko. She also embraced her extended family, including son-in-law, Floreal, and daughters-in-law, Tish and Gina, with warmth and generosity.
A lover of nature, Masako found joy in the beauty of the outdoors, whether it was tending to a garden or simply watching the changing seasons. She had a deep appreciation for literature and was a lifelong reader, often losing herself in the pages of a book. Her passion for learning never waned, and she inspired those around her to remain curious and open to the world.
Masako will be remembered for her gentle spirit, ever present smile, her quiet intelligence, work ethic and the enduring love she gave to her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of grace and gratitude.
A service will be held to honor her life on May 23, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Nichiren Buddhist Temple, located at 2801 E. 4th Street, Los Angeles. Masako will be laid to rest next to her husband at Rose Hills Cemetery.
