Beautifully wrapped in furoshiki and artfully prepared by Chef John Nishio, the Kenjinkai Picnic Obento is back and will be ready for pick-up on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 4 p.m. at Nishio’s house in Pasadena.
Presented by Nishio and the Grateful Crane Ensemble, the bento is a nostalgic and delicious recreation of the “gochiso” served at Japanese American community picnics.
“It’s the flavors of my Issei baachan,” said Nishio. “We hope you enjoy tasting them again.”
Each obento will include chicken karaage, salmon shioyaki, inarizushi, makizushi, teriyaki beef rolls, shrimp with shell on, chashu, kimpira gobo, green bean goma-ae, Japanese potato salad, nishime, tamagoyaki, kyuri tsukemono and takuan.
Proceeds from the obento sale will benefit Grateful Crane and its effort to provide safe, clean drinking water for children in Fukushima.
Obento are $65 each and will be available for pick-up at 645 Rim Rd., Pasadena between 4 and 6 p.m. To place an order, email gratefulcrane@ gmail.com.
