Asian representation at the 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards, presented Jan. 11 in Beverly Hills, included wins for director Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet” and for the animated feature “K-Pop Demon Hunters.”
“Hamnet,’’ in which Agnes and William Shakespeare grapple with the loss of their son, won two major awards, taking home Best Motion Picture-Drama and also earning a big-screen Best Actress in a Drama award for Jessie Buckley.
Also nominated for best dramatic movie were “Frankenstein,” “It Was Just an Accident,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners” and “The Secret Agent.”
Zhao was nominated for Best Director-Motion Picture. The award went to Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another.”
Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell were nominated for Best Screenplay-Motion Picture, but Anderson won that award as well.
South Korean director Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” was nominated for Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy but the award went to “One Battle After Another.”
Best Motion Picture-Animated went to “K-Pop Demon Hunters,” directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. The other nominees were “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Infinity Castle,” “Arco,” “Elio,” “Little Amélie or the Character of Rain,” and “Zootopia 2.”
The “K-Pop Demon Hunters” song “Golden” won Best Original Song-Motion Picture. Music by Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seo, Park Hong Jun; lyrics by Kim Eun-jae (EJAE), Mark Sonnenblick.
Also nominated were songs from “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “Sinners,” “Wicked: For Good,” and “Train Dreams.”
“K-Pop Demon Hunters” was also nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The award went to “Sinners.” Other nominees: “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “F1,” “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” “Weapons,” “Wicked: For Good,” and “Zootopia 2.”
“No Other Choice” was nominated for Best Motion Picture-Non-English Language, but the award went to Brazil’s “The Secret Agent.”
Dwayne Johnson was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama for his portrayal of mixed martial artist Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine.” The award went to Wagner Moura for “The Secret Agent.”
Lee Byung-Hun, star of “No Other Choie,” was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy. The award went to Timothée Chalamet for “Marty Supreme.”
Kumail Nanjiani was among the nominees for Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on Television. The award went to Ricky Gervais. Also nominated were Bill Maher, Brett Goldstein, Kevin Hart and Sarah Silverman.
