Saturday, March 21, 7 p.m. — Hatsuuma-sai 初午祭: A very important matsuri for Inari shrines. It is said that Uka-no-mitama-no-kami, also known as Inari Ōkami-sama, descended to Mt. Inari on the first Horse Day in the second month, in the year 711 AD (和銅4年). All Inari jinja (Shinto shrines) celebrate that event on the first Horse Day in the second month of the year either by the lunar or modern calendar. Shusse Inari Jinja has always held Hatsuuma by the lunar calendar, following the Spring Matsuri. Traditionally people visit an Inari shrine, known as the “lucky visit,” as it is believed visiting on this day brings good fortune to you. We hope you will join our Hatsuuma-sai livestream and receive good fortune from Inari Ōkami-sama.

Wednesday, April 22, 7 p.m. — Dear Earth 地球感謝祭: On this day, we hold our annual ceremony to show respect to Kami-sama, Nature Spirits, to remind ourselves that we are sharing this planet with other lives. We express our gratitude to the Earth for all it provides for us. We use this opportunity to renew our vows to care for this planet and each other. We will have a special presentation by Adrienne Blythe, master of ecology, University of Auckland in New Zealand, about the relationship between people, freshwater aquatic plants, and the environment.
