The Japanese American Cultural & Community Center is proud to present the Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) Celebration on Sunday, May 3, at its campus, 244 S. San Pedro St. in Little Tokyo.
The day begins with Chibi-K: Kids Run Fun from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by the Kodomo no Hi Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A cherished Little Tokyo tradition, Chibi-K invites children to race through the closed streets of Little Tokyo in a safe, non-competitive fun run cheered on by family and friends.
The morning kicks off at 8:40 a.m. with a lively performance by Los Angeles Mugen Taiko, with the race beginning promptly at 9 a.m. Every child receives a finisher prize, making it a joyful start to the day.
Beginning at 11 a.m., the Kodomo no Hi Celebration invites families and young explorers to discover Japanese and Japanese American traditions through free hands-on workshops, traditional games, interactive storytelling, and festive performances. Guests can also enjoy a selection of sweet and savory Japanese treats avail-able for purchase.
This year’s celebration features “Kibō Nobori” (Hope Flags), an installation series by artist Faith-Ann Kiwa Young inspired by traditional koinobori. During the May 3 celebration, the Tea Room installation will become a participatory space where children can draw and add their own messages of hope.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the James Irvine Japanese Garden, open to the public with optional 10-min-ute tours provided by the Little Tokyo Historical Society beginning at 11:30 a.m., available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration for Chibi-K is $35 per child and available at jaccc.org. The Kodomo no Hi Celebration is free and open to the public, with RSVP encouraged.
