A special cultural workshop introducing a simplified, “no-cut” pre-tied obi technique will be held on Saturday, May 30, at the New Gardena Hotel, 1641 W. Redondo Beach Blvd. in Gardena, marking the U.S. launch of Warakukai.
The three-hour session, scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, will feature certified instructors invited from Japan, offering participants a rare opportunity to learn traditional obi styling methods adapted for ease and accessibility.

The workshop focuses on creating a pre-tied obi without cutting the fabric — a technique designed to preserve the original form of the obi while allowing for easier dressing. Organizers say the method is particularly suited for beginners or those seeking a more practical way to wear kimono independently.
Participants will be able to choose from several styles, including the classic Otaiko knot (for Nagoya or Fukuro obi), the elegant Ginza knot, and the decorative Fukura Suzume knot. Instruction on how to wear the finished obi will also be provided following the workshop.

The class fee is $80, which includes materials. Participants are asked to bring their own obi, obi-age, obi-jime, and obi-ita. Sewing tools such as needles and pin cushions used during the session will be provided as a gift. Attendance is limited to 30 people.
The event is organized by Warakukai USA in collaboration with Diamond Space Easy Knit Sewing, led by Rika Kaneko. The workshop reflects a growing effort to lower barriers to kimono dressing while preserving traditional aesthetics and craftsmanship.
Free parking is available.
For registration, email diamondsewing@yahoo.com or text (310) 702-2586. Participants are asked to indicate their preferred obi style when signing up.
