“Sheep in the Box,” written, directed and edited by Hirokazu Koreeda, opens Friday, July 31, at theaters around the Southland.
In the near future, Otone Komoto (Haruka Ayase) works as an architect. She is married to Kensuke Komoto (Daigo Yamamoto), who runs a construction company. After the death of their son, the couple decide to welcome into their home a humanoid robot, Kakeru (Rimu Kuwaki), who is identical to their late child.
The film had its world premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and was released in Japan by Toho last May.
Koreeda rose to prominence with his drama films “Nobody Knows” (2004), “Still Walking” (2008), and “Like Father, Like Son” (2013), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes. His drama film “Shoplifters” (2018) won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film. His recent films include “Broker” (2022) and “Monster” (2023).
“Sheep in the Box” will be playing through Aug. 12 (depending on the venue) at the following theaters:
