“The Samurai and the Prisoner,” directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, will be shown at Landmark Nuart Theatre, 11272 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Los Angeles, from Friday, July 31, to Thursday, Aug. 6.
When Lord Murashige (Masahiro Motoki) rises up against the tyrannical Oda (Shingo Bando), he finds himself besieged within the walls of his own castle. Isolated, he is confronted with a series of mysterious crimes that shatter the fragile order of his court, plunging the fortress into fear and suspicion.
With Oda’s army closing in and a traitor hiding among his ranks, Murashige is forced into an uneasy alliance with Kanbei (Masaki Suda), a brilliant and dangerous strategist held prisoner in the dungeon, as he must outwit his enemies and uncover the truth before time runs out.
The cast also includes Yuriko Yoshitaka, Munetaka Aoki and Ryota Miyadate.
Based on a novel by Honobu Yonezawa, this is the first historical film by Kurosawa, who is known for thrillers such as “Cure” and “Cloud.” “The Samurai and the Prisoner” had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
