The Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute announced this year’s scholarship winners during the GVJCI Matsuri Fundraiser on June 27.
They were introduced by GVJCI Executive Director Alison Kochiyama and members of the GVJCI Scholarship Committee.
High School Scholarships
Gary Hori Memorial Scholarship — Logan Garcia, Lawndale High School. He will be attending UC Merced.
Kelli Tani Scholarship — Quincy Ishida, North Torrance High School. She will be attending Fordham University in New York.
Undergrad/Graduate Scholarships
Gardena Valley Gardeners Association Legacy Scholarship — Kristi Ikemoto, UCLA. She is entering her senior year pursuing a bachelor’s degree majoring in psychology with a minor in Asian American studies.
GVJACL Scholarship — Carina Sakimura, San Jose State University.
She is in her second year of graduate school pursuing a master’s degree in occupational therapy.
Brian Takeo Mitsunaga Memorial Scholarship — Brooke Shibata, UC Irvine. She is entering her senior year pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international studies and economics.
