Henry Horie, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend, passed away in July 2026. He was 99 years old.
Henry was born in April 1927 in Torrance, California to Sukesaburo and Kame Horie, immigrants from Japan. Henry was first-generation Japanese American. At the start of WWII, his father was arrested by the FBI and separated from family. Henry, his mother and sister, Sakiyo were sent to the internment camp in Jerome, Arkansas. The father joined the family in Crystal City, Texas, at the family reunification center for individuals identified by the U.S. government as enemy aliens. Over 4,000 Japanese, German and Italian nationals were held at this internment camp.
Henry graduated from high school in Crystal City. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1946. He studied Japanese in the Army Language School and became an interpreter. He served in Japan during the occupation period. He was honorably discharged in September 1949.
Henry attended L.A. Trade Technical School and studied electronics. He had a lifelong career at Hoffman Electronics Corporation, which was later bought by Gould Electronics. He worked on military and space technology navigation systems. In 1989, he took early retirement at 62.
Henry married Umeko Komatsu in 1961. They lived in Gardena. His daughter, Karie, was born in November 1963.
David Addison joined the family when he married Karie on August 8, 1998. Henry welcomed his grandchild in March 2001.
He was living in a private board and care home in Arcadia, where he peacefully passed away in July 2026.
Henry is survived by his daughter, Karie; her husband, David; their child, Sarah; his sister, Sakiyo; various cousins, and friends who know him as Grampa Henry.
