Legendary Hawaii band celebrates more than 50 years of music Oct. 11.
The legendary sounds of Hawaii return to Southern California when Kalapana takes the stage at South Coast Winery Resort & Spa, 34843 Rancho California Rd. in Temecula, on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m., closing out the 2026 Rhythm on the Vine Jazz Concert Series.
Joining Kalapana for this special evening will be Michael Paulo, the internationally acclaimed saxophonist, composer, recording artist and producer who began his career as an original touring member of Kalapana. Also appearing as a special guest is award-winning Hawaii singer-songwriter Kalaʻe Parish.
For more than five decades, Kalapana has helped define the sound of contemporary Hawaiian music. Formed in Hawaii in the 1970s, the group created a distinctive blend of pop, rock, jazz and island influences that earned a devoted following throughout Hawaii, the U.S. mainland and Japan.
Songs including “Naturally,” “The Hurt,” “Nightbird,” “When the Morning Comes” and “Juliette” became part of the soundtrack of a generation and remain favorites today. Kalapana’s music has also found a younger audience through children and grandchildren who grew up hearing the band’s songs played at home.
During its storied career, Kalapana performed with and opened for major artists including Earth, Wind & Fire, Batdorf & Rodney, and The Moody Blues, while playing to sold-out audiences in Hawaii, the U.S. mainland and Japan. The band’s enduring contribution to Hawaii music was recognized with a Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Oct. 11 performance continues that legacy with longtime Kalapana members Kenji Sano and Gaylord Holomalia, along with musicians carrying the group’s music and history forward.
For Paulo, the evening is also a return to his musical roots. A graduate of St. Louis School in Honolulu, he went on from his early years touring with Kalapana to an international career that included more than a decade touring and recording with Grammy Award-winning vocalist Al Jarreau. He has also performed and recorded with artists including James Ingram, Patti Austin, Kenny Loggins, Jeffrey Osborne and Deniece Williams.
Paulo has maintained strong ties to Hawaii and its music throughout his career. Together with his wife, Terri, he produces concerts and music events through Apaulo Productions, including the Rhythm on the Vine series at South Coast Winery.
Representing another generation of Hawaii music is Parish, an award-winning Native Hawaiian singer-songwriter and producer whose music blends contemporary country with the stories, landscape and paniolo traditions of Hawaii.
Parish’s album “Where I’m Going” received major honors at the 2025 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, while “Kickin’ Back” earned Song of the Year. Based in Waimea on Hawaii Island, Parish draws inspiration from island life and his family’s ranching roots and has shared the stage with nationally known country artists.
Together, Kalapana, Paulo and Parish bring different generations of Hawaii music to one stage, reconnecting audiences with songs that helped define an era while celebrating the continuing evolution of music from the islands.
For generations of Hawaii families, both in the islands and on the mainland, Kalapana’s songs evoke a particular time and place — backyard gatherings, drives to the beach, local radio and memories of home. More than 50 years later, those songs continue to bring generations together.
The Oct. 11 concert offers Southern California fans a rare opportunity to experience that music live once again in the vineyard setting of South Coast Winery Resort & Spa.
An artist meet-and-greet and wine reception begins at 6 p.m. for sponsor table and VIP ticket holders. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
Tickets, including fees, range from $67 to $252. Seating options include front-row sponsor tables, VIP tables, terrace tables, Preferred table seating and reserved theatre-style seating. Terrace seating is elevated, requires the use of stairs, and is not wheelchair-accessible.
