The Mikawaya confectionery store in Gardena’s Pacific Square closed at the beginning of January. The shop dates back to the 1970s, when the shopping center was established. This closure follows the shuttering of the Mikawaya in the Little Tokyo Galleria in March 2013 and the Honolulu store in 2011. The main store in Little Tokyo’s Japanese Village Plaza and a smaller store at Mitsuwa in Torrance remain open. Mikawaya is a multi-million-dollar business known mainly for its mochi ice cream, which is sold in supermarkets across the country.
