Green Screen: Our Planet on Film will present “Manzanar, Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust” (2021) on Thursday, April 17, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at the NHM Commons Theater, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles.

An inspired and poetic portrait of a place and its people, “Manzanar, Diverted” follows intergenerational women from three communities who defend their land, their history and their culture from the insatiable thirst of Los Angeles. In this fresh retelling of the L.A. water story, Native Americans, Japanese American WWII incarcerees and environmentalists form an unexpected alliance to preserve Payahuunadü (Owens Valley), “the land of flowing water.”

Ann Kaneko

The film sheds light on the ongoing struggle of these communities to protect their land and cultural heritage in the face of a critical environmental issue. “Manzanar, Diverted” is a poignant and powerful reminder of the deep connections between land, culture, and the environment.

Stay for a post-film Q&A with award-winning filmmaker Ann Kaneko.
