Gary Fumio Kanagi, 86, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, with his granddaughter at his side. Born on November 2, 1939, Gary lived a life defined by kindness, integrity and an unwavering dedication to those he loved.

A devoted husband to his wife of 55 years, and a proud father and grandfather, Gary found his greatest joy in family gatherings, shared meals and spending time with his granddaughter. He was known for his humor and the way he made everyone feel welcome.

Gary’s career reflected his strong work ethic, but it was his generosity of spirit and willingness to help others that left the deepest mark on those who knew him. Whether volunteering in the community or lending a hand to a neighbor, Gary lived by example.

He is survived by his wife, Chisato; children, Peter (Angie) Del Colliano and Courtney Kanagi; granddaughter, Lauryn Kanagi; sister, Betty Burris; brother, Norman Kanagi; and a wide circle of extended family and friends. Though deeply missed, Gary’s legacy lives on through his family, his service to others and the countless quiet acts of kindness that defined his life.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, at 11:30 a.m. at The First Presbyterian Church of Newhall (24317 Newhall Avenue, Newhall) with a lunch reception to follow at the same location. Please wear casual attire, particularly aloha wear or Dodger gear which were his favorites.  In lieu of koden or flowers — in honor of Gary’s lifelong commitment to helping others — the family suggests donations be made in his name to a charity close to his heart: ZOE International (https://gozoe.org) or Santa Clarita Grocery Project (https://santaclaritagrocery.org).
