April 18, 1924 – February 21, 2025
Mataye Jane Nishi, a remarkable woman who lived a full and vibrant 100 years, passed away peacefully at her home on February 21, 2025. Born on April 18, 1924, in Visalia to Harry Astuyoshi Saisho and Kiyo Minami, Mataye’s early years were spent on the family farm in Hilmar.
Her life was marked by resilience and strength. She and her family relocated to the Amache/Granada Relocation Center during World War II. Following this difficult period, Mataye demonstrated her determination by pursuing her education in Denver and at beautician’s school in Minneapolis.
Returning to the family farm in Baldwin Park, she established herself as a successful businesswoman, owning and operating both a dry cleaners and a boarding house. Mataye had a deep love for travel, embarking on numerous global adventures by plane, ship, train, and automobile.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Mataye is survived by her devoted sons, Don Saisho along with daughter-in-law, Susan Saisho and Sam Nishi Saisho; her loving grandsons, Mark Saisho and Jeff Saisho; and a large extended family of nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her six brothers and sisters, and her son, Lester.
A celebration of Mataye’s life will be held with a funeral service on Friday, April 18, at 11 a.m. PDT at Rose Hills’ Hillside Chapel. In lieu of flowers or koden, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her honor to the National Park Foundation (NationalParks.org).
“How Lucky We Are!”
